Pte. Sydney Archer, 2963, York and Lancaster Regiment 3/5th Bn. Died 27th April 1915, Age 20.
Bio:
Sydney suffered from epilepsy and died due to complications of his illness. He passed away at the military hospital in York less than six months after enlisting. Because he had spent such a short time with the army, it meant he wasn't entitled to a military burial or headstone.

Did sidney ever go to france or anywhere for the war and if not why is he on the cenotaph .we are family of sidney and my dad was named after him and the stories we heard are differant.
ReplyDeleteAll the evidence I've found so far suggests he never served overseas. Although he didn't spend time abroad he was enlisted with the army at the time of his death which meant he was entitled to have his name remembered on a war memorial. I'm very interested to hear any information about Sydney you may have as I have only been able to find a very small amount about him in the official records and nothing in the local newspaper archives.
